Like its neighbor town of Conifer, Evergreen, Colorado is an unincorporated community located in Jefferson county, 45 minutes west of downtown Denver, Colorado. Evergreen boasts only 9,000 residents but limitless charm. At approximately 7,200 feet above sea level, Evergreen is stunning mountain town, rife with natural beauty.
Nestled among the trees, for which the town was named, Evergreen is surrounded by mountain parks and open spaces containing miles of trails to ride, hike, run, or gallop upon. The town’s lake, Evergreen Lake, was voted one of the top ten most scenic areas for ice skating in the world, which is permitted from around Christmas through March.
Though a small town, Evergreen offers a wide range of activities which include art galleries, museums, theater, shops, restaurants, and an endless supply of outdoor activities. The town’s ethos can be captured in one of its galleries, a walk through the town, or a visit to the Hiwan Homestead. The homestead, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, grew from a one-room cabin in the late 1800s into a 25-room lodge. Now a museum, the Hiwan Homestead reflects rustic Colorado architecture and provides a wealth of history about the region.
Some believe the first settlers to the area were French fur trappers and lumberjacks. Prior to this, the land was often used by Native American tribes, and early Evergreen land was included in treaties between the U. S. with different tribes before the Gold Rush.
Evergreen’s beauty and proximity to the state capitol, Denver, with all the modern conveniences and trappings of a big city, makes it a great location for those that want to bond with nature and remain close to the city.
